> Burnham and the City of Angels

Friday, March 30th, 2012

“I was contacted by Burnham Nationwide’s San Jose office and met with Greg Sellers during a Solar convention he was attending. I had started a company 18 months prior, specializing in gas station permitting work throughout California based on a mandate of enhanced vapor recovery, from state air quality folks. With a fueling background from Mobil Oil and Hertz Corporation, I was able to help over 130 independent dealers pull their needed permits to achieve compliance.

Greg mentioned the parent company, Burnham Nationwide, specialized in building permitting services, and while his office was focused on solar efforts, he asked if I would be interested in helping out the Chicago office with permitting projects for several Chase bank branches in the Los Angeles area. The projects were a great success and we decided this could be a permanent thing. I returned home, found a small starter office and Burnham Los Angeles was born.

While we are fairly new to the Burnham family, we have moved, doubled office space and are poised for growth and market share in Southern California. Happy 20th Anniversary Burnham, it’s great to be here.”

> The New Millennium Brings New Opportunities

Friday, March 30th, 2012
The new millennium came roaring in - bringing with it the good, the innovative and the sometimes wacky. Remember Y2K? The emerging dot com boom? The debut of the Euro on the global financial stage?

At Burnham Nationwide changes were happening just as quickly and business was growing rapidly. Our nascent offices in New York and Denver were coming into their own. Technological and environmental revolutions born in mid-nineties now commanded a prominent position in business and popular culture. How could we capitalize on this opportunity? We did so by broadening our reach into new and emerging markets, namely the solar energy industry. We expanded our core services and reach to clients operating nationally, as well as under represented markets on the west coast.

With that, we set our sights on California, opening an office in Los Angeles and establishing Burnham Energy in San Jose, a wholly owned subsidiary specializing in solar permit expediting and site inspections. We formalized a Nationwide division, focused on the specific needs of clients who operate in multiple locations from coast to coast.

> Burnham Energy – The Sky’s the Limit

“In 2007 I was volunteering with SolarTech, a non-profit trying to reduce the time and challenges associated with the issuance of solar permits and building inspections. We concluded the answer would come from the private sector. In July 2007, I founded StablSolar to develop a better way of processing permits and providing inspections.

My participation in the first annual SolarTech Summit attracted the attention of Dan Phelps, who had recently joined the board of Burnham Nationwide and was advising them to consider expanding into the solar industry. After meeting with Dan it became clear there might be an opportunity here, so I traveled to Chicago and met with Carson. We agreed a partnership was worth pursuing and together formed Burnham Energy.

We are honored to be a part of the Burnham Nationwide team, and look forward to celebrating the first 20 years, and the next 20!”

>Burham and the Wild-West Lindsey Fleener’s Story

Wednesday, March 28th, 2012

“In 2004, I was working for a company that specialized in cell phone tower site acquisitions throughout the Chicago Metropolitan area. A key component of the site acquisition work was permitting and I served as the company’s in-house permit and zoning expeditor. While in that role, I would often observe Burnham employees at city hall wearing their impressive uniforms.

Shortly thereafter Carson approached my company in an effort to convince them to utilize Burnham’s services, as opposed to performing the work in-house. I was impressed by Burnham’s services as well as Carson’s enthusiasm and drive.

At the same time I was planning a move to Denver,Colorado. I reached out to Burnham to inquire about opportunities in their Denver office. During that meeting Carson informed me that – while Burnham did conduct business nationwide – they did not possess a physical office in Denver.

In that moment, a light bulb went off in both of our heads simultaneously. Later, I helped launch Burnham’s Denver office and proudly became a Burnham colleague.

Several years later, the Burnham Denver office has made its presence felt in Denver and throughout the west, having expedited permitting for hundreds of clients along the Rocky Mountain Front Range and from Arizona to Nevada.”- Lindsey Fleener, Burnham -Denver

>Burnham Takes a Bit Out of the Big Apple

Wednesday, March 28th, 2012

“Our first office was at 299 Broadway, it was a closet that fit three folding tables and three chairs. As business grew, we moved out and up to130 William Streetand 1500 roomy square feet. My first thought was, ‘ what are we going to do with all this space?’ It quickly filled up and shortly thereafter we moved up 4 floors and added 1500 square feet of office space for a total of 3000 square feet. Our current location is directly across the street from the NYC Department of Buildings, which is convenient for our clients and us. I think we can claim to be the closest consultants to the Building Department.

As the new guys in town, our early years in NY were challenging. Mike Gaynor even spent a couple years working the streets trying to land new clients. Now we have a staff of 15 and in the past year alone secured permits for ABS Partners Real Estate, Brookfield Properties, CB Richard Ellis, Park Tower Management, Tribeca Green & The Veneto. It’s been a wild, crazy and rewarding ride. Here’s to another 20.”

Burnham Celebrates It’s 20th Anniversary!

Tuesday, March 27th, 2012

This year Burnham celebrates its 20th anniversary and we’d like to take this opportunity to share with you the story of how Burnham Nationwide came to be, where we are headed and how Daniel Burnham’s message has inspired us along the way.

 > Fast forward 6 years…

It’s 1998 and at Burnham Nationwide we have fully embraced Daniel Burnham’s sentiment to make no little plans. We’ve aimed high and made some big strides, and most importantly learned from our experiences. After the first couple years in business it became quite clear to us that in order to succeed we would need to develop partnerships with leading architects, contractors, and building managers who understood our values and appreciated our platform for managing their compliance obligations. Like many other companies, we recognized the importance Customer Relationship Management (CRM) would have in our future growth and success.

Big Changes in Technology  Service Lines and Locations

Information systems that had been developed to manage the Chicago process were at their limit, for example: we needed bigger and better bandwidth. Working with Siebel Systems we developed a robust CRM system that would effectively manage our information and enhance the special experience in which our reputation was built.

The Code Group was launched in 2001, and focused on developing a deeper understanding of building codes. This commitment has enabled Burnham to better define our technical services, and provide us with the credentials to provide services beyond that of a typical “Permit Expeditor”.

Physically, we needed to be in more places to service our growing client base. We opened our first satellite office in New York City, a temporary office in St. Louis, and Detroit followed shortly thereafter. We also began efforts to find partners for offices in Seattle, Denver and Los Angeles.

The Burnham Story – Celebrating 20 Years! How It All Began…

Wednesday, March 21st, 2012
This year Burnham celebrates its 20th anniversary and we’d like to take this opportunity to share with you the story of how Burnham Nationwide came to be, where we are headed and how Daniel Burnham’s message has inspired us along the way.

> “Make no Small Plans; They Have no Magic to Stir Men’s Blood. Make Big Plans, Aim High in Hope and Work.”

These words, attributed to Chicago architect and urban planner, Daniel Hudson Burnham, capture the essence of his visionary spirit. And just as Burnham envisioned greatness in every endeavor undertaken, at Burnham Nationwide so do we on a daily basis.

Daniel Burnham not only served as a catalyst for the company name, but also his beliefs have helped us become one of the premier regulatory and compliance consulting firms to the building and construction industries.

> In The Beginning There Were Two…

Back in 1992, gas was $1.05 a gallon, the Sears Tower was the tallest building in the world, and Microsoft Works was released by Microsoft, there were two friends and business partners, Carson Kyhl and Mike Gaynor; each of whom shared a vision and a common goal: to offer a special experience for the construction industry to maintain municipal compliance. Creating this experience would require a new way of thinking, including: promoting a transparent approach for information exchange with governments, understanding the roles and responsibilities of everyone on the team, and most importantly – doing what we say we are going to do.

20 years later, with the support of dedicated and passionate employees, their vision, inspired by Daniel Burnham’s, can lay claim to success, having obtained well over 100,000 permits from coast to coast, Hawaii and Puerto Rico.

> The Burnham Difference

The landscape that gave rise to Burnham Nationwide 20 years ago may be slightly different than today’s, but the principles that guide our business remain steadfastly unchanged:

* Caring for People – Appreciating every stakeholder, their role and responsibility, and always working to effectively and efficiently support one another

* Leading Through Innovation – Recognizing that success and growth happen by creating new and better processes

* Improving Productivity – Learning from experience and practicing tenacious problem solving

* Perfecting Customer Service – Assuming ownership of your satisfaction by consistently meeting or exceeding client expectations

At Burnham Nationwide, we add the human touch to a process that at times can be cumbersome and tedious. Every employee is committed to enhancing your experience, assuming ownership of each project from start to finish, and consistently following through on our promise to “Simply Get It Done”!

That’s only the beginning… up next, Burnham Nationwide expands upward and outward!

ADA Building Requirements: Handrails

Wednesday, March 21st, 2012

In designing a structure to meet the highest ADA building requirements for compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, the overall result can truly be said to be the sum of its parts.

Strict adherence to the smallest of details needed to meet regulatory standards reflects the workmanship in complying with the highest rigors to design an ADA-adherent edifice. Take handrails, for example—literally, if you like, take a tape measure to these elements to begin to understand the strict nature of ADA adherence!

Generally speaking, ADA guidelines call for handrails to be installed between 34 inches and 38 inches from the surface—that is to say, the ground, ramp or sidewalk. Many regulators recommend splitting the difference in case of any confusion, suggesting installation at the 36-inch mark.

Ah, but then it gets trickier when allowing for handrail surroundings. ADA guidelines place peripheral posts—vertical or horizontal—at no greater a height than of 8 feet. It is recommended that posts be placed every six feet from center to center to ensure compliance.

Handrails or grab bars, along with any adjacent wall or surface, must be free of anything sharp or abrasive. ADA building requirements also call for 3/16” holes to be drilled onto handrails in mounting them to their brackets. Affixing handrails and grab bars to their respective brackets disallows rotation.

To the untrained eye, adherence to such minor details into overall construction can easily be missed. Even without such mandates, Burnham Nationwide has built its reputation on paying attention to details large and small in designing projects to the highest of specifications. Think of Burnham as you plan your next design project. For further insight, it might be helpful to contact a Burnham specialist to see what they have to offer and how they can help you understand the ADA building requirements pertinent to your job site.

Adherence to ADA standards is crucial, heightening the importance of having a designing partner of the highest caliber. Since its inception, Burnham has built its reputation on adhering to the highest workmanship standards.

Beyond merely following the law, ADA compliance also is critical to a company’s bottom line. Since ADA passage in 1980, a cottage industry of sorts has emerged centered on lawsuits filed for noncompliance. Much of this litigation revolves not around the ubiquitous ramps, but the less visible handrails that are central to ADA compliance. Retailers and restaurateurs have been especially hit with mounting litigation over inadequate handrails, as attorneys aggressively secure clients looking to file lawsuits in search of financial recovery. Sometimes, the pickings are easy. In one notable case in California, one plaintiff went down a stretch of highway to find noncompliance, filing 20- lawsuits in one 24-hour period as a result!

ADA noncompliance can result in thousands of dollars worth of fines. In terms of litigation, expenses could easily be exponentially greater. In another example, one plaintiff in Fort Pierce, Fla., was awarded $1 million in damages in 2010 after suing her apartment complex over a faulty handrail.

For the sake of your business, it is important to ally yourself with a reputable consultant. With more than 50,000 building permits under its belt since its 1989 founding, Burnham Nationwide has ample experience with ADA compliance. Our very name alludes to a commitment to quality projects, honoring famed Chicago architect and urban planner Daniel Hudson Burnham who imbued greatness to every endeavor—big or small.
